"If
you aren't promoting your music on MySpace yet, you need to start -- fast!" I
NEED MYSPACE: KURB'S GUIDE TO THE SUPERSITE Myspace. I won't faff about I'll get straight to the point. What's the big idea? Well it's just a website! You sign up and you make a profile. I guess it's kind of based on a dating site, except it's not specifically for dating! Y'know, you put your favourite photos up, you explain a bit about yourself and what kind of stuff you're into, add a song from one of your favourite groups (or if you're a musician choose "artist sign up"), post blogs, and then you're away. You're ready to start adding friends who could be anyone from your real life mates, to your favourite bands, artists, shows, comedians etc. to people who share similar interests. You can search or browse for users, or use the forums, or join thousands of special interest groups dedicated to every subject you can imagine. That way you keep those people handy on your contact list, and you can share comments, private blogs, post bulletins etc. A real draw in for the teeming multitudes of young teenagers that use this site mainly for basic social interaction, especially the young girls I should imagine, is that fact that each profile page is fully customisable, you can make it look like anything, with dozens of independent support sites all devoted to pretty designs and effects and special pics so you can totally "pimp your page". Now all of this would be pretty neat and cool but wouldnt mean much if it wasn't for the masive amount of people now using this site. When I signed up around new years 2005 there were 4 million profiles. That expanded 15 months later to 74 million profiles, and almost 2 years later to 140 million profiles. I would estimate no less than 20,000 New Zealanders at the least use the site. But yeah, that means pretty much a lot of activity happening around this site. Most likely your favourite bands whether worldwide superstars or guys down the road, have a profile. And that also means the potential to reach an audience both locally to come to shows and internationally to buy your cd online is - and it has been shown - pretty much limitless. |

From the famous-on-myspace Tia Tequila and Forbidden to bona fide stars like Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, Panic! at the Disco they all have myspace all or in part to thank for thier meteoric rise. Rupert Murdoch's Newscorp knew what they were onto when they purchased the site in august 2005 for 570 million dollars, which saw it's commercial content skyrocket. You barely noticed the ads before! it still remains one of the biggest and most frequently used websites in the world so thats why it's a big deal! Phone
