COMPOUND: GET REAL, BE SCENE
so what is reality compound? Is it a band? Is it a blog? Is it a joke? Definately.
Because Reality Compound is a story. A story of what? It's a story about a "band". Is the band "real"? I dunno. You tell me. They have songs. They do gigs. Is that real enough for you?
Reality Compound is a new multimedia project by Auckland DJ/Producer Romantech, stalwart of the Data:bass and Mental Illness projects that spawned seven cd-r compilation of local electronic music.
As well as releasing dancefloor Drum'n Bass and Downbeat grooves that have solicited international attention with tunes licensed by Ripcurl and over 30,000 downloads in 2005, Matt has developed a tongue-in-cheek "electrotrash" act Style Over Substance, which he has performed across the country as part of an electronic showcase where he also performed as Romantech. Also produced was a video for "Whiskey on the Rocks."
The concept of Reality Compound came from Matt's desire to reinvigorate his passion for writing and fiction, having already completed one manuscript "Evil Robot". Reality Compound was created as a fictional concept in a blog and on a myspace page featuring songs from Style Over Substance and another sound with which he was replicating the "shoegaze" or indie sound of UK alternative guitar bands on his computer, As "The Further"
Matt then began to draw on and dramatise elements of his own stories within the local music scene . . . songwriting, gigging, dealings and fictional tensions within the bands blended with overt references to events and scenes taking place in reality. Even Matt himself plays the part of the selfish manager, always putting himself first at the expense of the bands.
Matt draws comparisons with the Gorillaz in terms of a fake band, but feels the failings of the characters portrayed in the story as well as the murky line between what's happening in the story, and what's happening within the reality of clusters of the New Zealand music scene, makes it an exciting new concept in storytelling. Fiction and Biography have been blended and the outcome is open ended.
Having generated a massive response on www.myspace.com second only in popularity to big acts such Elemeno P and Steriogram, Matt is now going ahead with the Reality Compound CD-Rom that will include mp3's and videos from Reality Compound, a host of local indie and electro acts, and some great overseas acts associated with Matt's 0474:8455 label. Also included will be a printable version of both Reality Compound's blog and their daily myspace
