MENTAL
ILLNESS began
back in 2003 as a weekly night designed to become an outlet for
the Data:bass guys to explore other sides of the electronic/turntable
spectrum with a real leftfield sensibility. From that, Mental Illness
became a subsidiary project of 0474:8455 Recordings, dedicated primarily
to turntable/ electronic/sequenced music outside of Drum'n Bass,
as a repose and an outlet for DBN to provide an opportunity for
affiliated producers to showcase the best of their experiments in
other genres.
The first
Mental Illness compilation was released in October 2003 featuring
15 local artists on 21 tracks over 77 minutes. There have now been
three Mental Illness compilations proper, and two specialist experimental
CD's.

With MENTAL ILLNESS we promote diversity as the new purism. The
general concept is that beyond the boundaries of genre there can
be a genuine appreciation for evocative and provocative tunes wether
commercial, experimental, emotional or absurd, across the full spectrum
of turntable based genres. The most exciting thing about Mental
Illness is the idea of just putting the music out there, no faffing
about. Mental Illness puts out unique music from our producers that
celebrates a whole different set of musical values.
Send
us your demos! Not just electronic but indie stuff or anything weird
and wonderful or whatever!

SO
WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW WITH THE MENTALLY ILL?
In 2006 we dropped
Mental Illness 3, which we planned to be the final Mental Illness
compilation, but to be honest it's quite unlikely. With the best
of Mental Illness now invigorating the new K.urb projects which
has kicked off with the "Oceanic Chill" downbeat compilation,
we're planning a new CD repackaging the best of the Mental Illness
series into a comprehensive retrospective. But dedicated as ever
to new electronic music and talent coming up from the depths of
the underground, a shabby bunch of home made cd-r's lovingly hand
crafted by data:bass and bearing the title "Mental Illness
4" shouldn't be too far away . . .

Recordings label and the first to be issued under the Mental Illness subsidiary
dedicated to electronic and turntable based music outside of format Dance genres. | |
Says
0474:8455 Recordings boss Romantech: "The CD is totally ship shape and Bristol
fashion : It's 95, you're drinking a Soya Mocca Latte, you've got your Kumara
Panini - with a side of pesto - on 100% Recycled Rimu and the Mental Illness Compilation
is playing." Low
slung blunted madness is laid down by DJ Fiction, Kyren, Dr Lovelazy and Oosterdaddy
with serious vocal talent displayed on vibing tunes from Dfusion, Jamie Newman
and Romantech/Haze. State of Mind's Pat Million chips in with a couple of funky
breakbeats while General practitoner and 4Tune give us by the book Dub and Deep
House. Electro Insanity ensues with Shunryu doing Jarre, Electro Punk wonder woman
Soundlaydee, Fidgets trashy breakbeat rererevisitation of Trace's Mutant and New
trash art terrorists Style Over Substance featuring MC I'mIanCurtis. Evil
Robot, head of SOS research staff revealed candidly "Our Anthem "The
Joy F**k Club" was actually completed in less than an hour using A Roland
303, Drum Machine, Vibrator and an interdimensional portal." Bandmate
Kyle Machlachlan MF explains: "The result is a sexually charged supernatural
experiment." Fruit.
