Zinc,
I first got into drum
& bass when I was living in Christchurch in '99. Before then I lived
in sunny Whangaparaoa, where everyone lived off skating, beer, beaches,
punk & hip hop. I hadn't even heard any dnb until I moved to Christchurch.
It was the best place to be introduced to dnb - every Thursday night the
Point Blank crew would rip up Base, and it felt like there was an international
every few weeks. The feeling that you got when you went to The Ministry
for an international, and stood in front of those towering base bins while
the low frequencies shook every molecule in your body, was unlike anything
I'd experienced.
It wasn't until I moved back to Auckland, and my mate Scott B moved in
with his belt drive turntables, that I started thinking seriously about
Djing. It was the challenging aspect of mixing that first drew me towards
Djing, and when I started to overcome that, it was the challenge of working
a crowd and understanding how people react to different sounds, that made
me want to master DJing to another level. I still think I have a long
way to go to being a great DJ, but everytime I play in front of a crowd
I'm learning more.
My style is definately on the funky tip but I like to drop the odd amen
break or grimey bass line - especially if the crowd is going for it. I
enjoy playing layed back sets just as much as party sets, which is why
at DATA:BASS I usually play early, and ease people into the harder styles
that the others drop. I enjoy tunes that have a musical aspect to them
rather than tech tracks, and admire producers such as Bukem and Peshay
who have musical training that they bring to their tunes.
Like all of us involved with DATA:BASS I am entering into the production
side of things, so look out in the future for more home grown dnb goodness
. . .
